FITNESS By Design

Barb Mendoza, Owner

I became the owner of FITNESS by Design in 2004, but my start in the fitness industry came many years before that. I received my B.S. Degree in Exercise Science from Iowa State University in 1989 and became a Gold Certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise in 1990. I started the personal training program at 7 Flags Fitness and Racquet Club. Personal training took off and became my career path, and I have been doing it ever since! I am recognized as an Elite Personal Fitness Trainer by the International Dance Exercise Association (IDEA).

My passion is motivating my clients to make healthy lifestyle changes involving exercise, nutrition, and stress reduction. I challenge my personal training and class clients to go out of their comfort zone in order to achieve greater results. As a business owner, I strive to create a studio atmosphere and work environment that is positive, fun, inspiring, and nurturing.

We want to be the BEST part of your day! Every day my team and I work diligently to provide you with exemplary customer service that sets us apart from other studios. I believe in working hard not only to EARN your fitness business, but to KEEP it long term!

Company Mission: At FITNESS By Design, we strive every day to motivate, educate, and inspire our clients to go out of their comfort zone, be their best, and attain optimum health.

FBD Core Values: Honesty and integrity always. Strong partnerships and teamwork. High standards and performance.

Training Philosophy

There are a wide variety of tools available for improving your fitness level. If you take a look at my personal training studios, you will find dumbbells, ropes, kettlebells, a functional trainer, medicine balls, BOSU balls, stability balls, suspension training systems, resistance bands, trampolines, and plenty of open space to move. These tools all keep us moving and getting stronger in the “real” functional sense.

The biggest advantage of functional training is the transfer to real life. We want to help you by training you in movement patterns that will help you lift groceries out of your car, climb stairs, play your favorite sport, or carry your child or grandchild!

Our parking lot is accessible off of Ingersoll Avenue, just west of Polk Boulevard. You will see a Raker and Rhodes Engineering and FITNESS By Design sign at the entrance of the driveway. We are located in the lower level of the brick building. Walk down the stairs to Grand Avenue level and the entrances to Studio East and West will be on your left. You can also park on Polk Blvd. and then walk to our entrance on Grand Ave.
