Barb Mendoza, Owner

I became owner of FITNESS by Design in 2004 but my start in the fitness industry came many years before that. I received my B.S. Degree in Exercise Science from Iowa State University in 1989 and became a Gold Certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise in 1990. There were very few Personal Trainers back then, and I started the personal training program at 7 Flags Fitness and Racquet Club. Personal training took off and became my career path and I have been doing it ever since! I am recognized as an Elite Personal Fitness Trainer by the International Dance Exercise Association (IDEA). My passion is motivating my clients to make healthy lifestyle changes involving exercise, nutrition, and stress reduction. I challenge my personal training and class clients to go out of their comfort zone in order to achieve greater results. As a business owner, I strive to create a studio atmosphere and work environment that is positive, fun, inspiring and nurturing. We want to be the BEST part of your day! Every day my staff and I work diligently for YOU, the client, and strive to provide exemplary customer service that sets us apart from all other studios. I believe in working hard not only to EARN your fitness business, but to KEEP it long term!

Training Philosophy

There are a wide variety of tools available for improving your fitness level. I am often asked about my training philosophy, specifically my preference of free weights vs machines. If you take a look at my personal training studios, you will find dumbbells, ropes, kettlebells, a functional trainer, medicine balls, BOSU balls, stability balls, suspension training systems, resistance bands, trampolines and plenty of open space to move. These tools all keep us moving and getting stronger in the “real” functional sense.

Traditional selectorized machines are isolative, in that you are working muscles in isolation as opposed to incorporating several muscle groups as well as core stability. Traditional machines work on a fixed path and do not require you to “weight bear” or stimulate the nervous system as much as free weight training. The biggest advantage of free weight or movement based functional training and Pilates training is the transfer to real life. We want to help you by training you in movement patterns that will help you lift groceries out of your car, climb stairs or carry your child or grandchild!

You only have to look at the variety of exercises available not only with dumbbells, but kettlebells, ropes, BOSUs, and Pilates equipment, etc. to see the obvious benefits of training functionally. The variety of exercises and tools allows the entire body to be trained, thus allowing the body to move through natural motions as well as all planes of movements. This freedom of movement mimics activities in real life.
